About this work
Seated woman pulling on the end of a red banner, at night. This is a scene from the kabuki play 'Motomishi hana otogi Heike' where actor Bandô Shûka I is depicted in the female role of Naruto no Mae. The red flame in the upper left is called 'kitsunebi' (fox fire) in Japanese and indicates that the woman is a ghost. Second panel from the right of a four-panel screen.
