About this work
Kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in the role of the self-proclaimed new emperor Masakado, with a beard, looking up at two geese that appear to be falling. At full moon. The blackened teeth and the shape of the painted eyebrows are characteristic of high-ranking courtiers. The feather pattern on his clothing refers to imperial power. Wild geese changing course refer to the presence of an enemy.
