About this work
This album features New Year's rituals, such as courtesans parading in their most beautiful garments on the first day of the year. Two girls are each holding a paddle. This is used for battledore and shuttlecock, a kind of badminton, which children only played on New Year's Day. Passing the shuttlecock without letting it touch the ground is thought to bring good fortune for the New Year.
