About this work
In a hilly landscape, a Roma woman is breastfeeding her baby. Next to her stands a young child with a bowl and a spoon. On her back is a third child who is crying. In the background, three travelers and a dog. 'Heathens' or 'heathen' is a contemporary term for Roma. The mother's breasts are painted and outlined with black chalk.
