About this work

Caricature of the French oboist and oboe maker Henri Brod. The print belongs to a series of 100 woodcuts by Théodore Maurisset (active 1834-1859) after Jean Pierre Dantan's caricature busts of French celebrities from 'Musée Dantan. Galerie des Charges et Croquis des célébrités de l'époque, avec texte explicatif et biographique' (Paris, 1839). In the caricature, Brod is depicted playing the bagpipes, a woodwind instrument that, like the oboe, has a reed but is of more folk origin.
