Lot Fleeing Sodom with His Wife and Daughters

An angel leads Lot and his wife and his two daughters out of Sodom. A small dog runs ahead of them. In the background a building with heavy columns and a landscape. Trial print of the unfinished engraving. A part of the lower zone and the entire left side are not yet completed. Only the contours of Lot's right foot and the angel's feet are indicated. Only the contour of the dog's right paw is engraved. Also the stone and the plants in the right corner are unfinished. A part of the completed left side of the plate, as well as the top and bottom, was later cut off. The trial print, where the plate edge is only partially visible, measures 370 x 465 mm; the completed plate 328 x 387 mm. After the painting by Rubens in the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota. The drawing that likely served as the model for the engraving is attributed to Anthony van Dyck and is located in the Louvre.
