End of the Union between Sweden and Norway after the declaration of independence by the Norwegian parliament on June 7, 1905. The Norwegian Maiden takes leave of the startled Swedish King Oscar II and the Swedish Maiden. In the background stands the Norwegian writer and politician Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
