About this work
Representatives of the great powers as children receiving gifts or oars from Sinterklaas. The Dutch Maiden receives two dolls from ministers Heemskerk and Van Swinderen (as clowns) and a toy lion on wheels from Abraham Kuyper. The naughty German Emperor Wilhelm II stands in the corner with an oar. Uncle Sam (the United States) receives a balloon from President Taft, the Ottoman Sultan a constitution, Marianne (France) a picture book about the Steinheil affair, and Emperor Franz Joseph dolls representing Bosnia and Herzegovina. A boy struggles with a crown too large for his head.
