About this work

A man looks from the bow of a ship into the water, where the arms and legs of the man he just threw overboard are visible. A geisha sits in the boat. The standing man is Kezori Kuemon, a pirate captain, played by Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjûrô IX. The woman depicted is Kabuki actor Sawamura Gennosuke IV as the geisha Kojorô. The man thrown overboard is Shôshichi, a merchant traveling to Hakata in southern Japan.
