About this work
Bust of an old, bearded man reading a book. With his chin resting on his hand, he is depicted in the pose of a melancholic. Due to the classical architecture in the background, the figure is likely to be identified as an ancient philosopher rather than as Hieronymus or John the Baptist, as he has also been identified.
