About this work

In the center of the image, a half-naked man is depicted looking directly at us, the viewers, and extending his hand to ask for alms. Under his outstretched hand lies a folded paper with three coins on it. To his left sits an older woman with her arm under her chin – the pose of a melancholic. To his right stands a blind man with a staff in his hand.
