About this work
Saint Benedict, an old man with a white beard, kneels before a crucifix. As abbot of Monte Cassino he has a crozier. In the tree to the right sits a raven. The raven with a loaf of bread in its beak refers to the attempt of an envious priest to poison him. Benedict noticed that the bread was poisoned and had it taken away by a raven. In the background the abbey of Monte Cassino can be seen.
