A three-quarter portrait in front view of Johannes Coccejus (1603-1669). The large white collar stands out clearly against the sober black clothing. He wears a cap on his long, flaxen hair. With his hand on his heart he looks piercingly at the viewer. Johannes Coccejus was a German-Dutch theologian and orientalist and professor successively in Bremen (1630), Franeker (1636) and Leiden (1650). He intertwined the relationship of the believer with God in a complicated covenant theology and showed himself a supporter of the power of the government over the Church. His followers have for years fought the followers of his opponent Voetius.
