About this work
The Jesuit John Berchmans kneels before an open grave with skull and bones in an interior. In his hand he holds a crucifix, rosary and prayer book and he looks devoutly upwards where light rays break through a cloud. Against the wall hangs a painting with Mary and Child, on a table stands an hourglass.
