About this work
Mary rests. On her lap, Christ plays with John the Baptist. Both are two to three years old. To her left, Joseph ensures the donkey can graze. In the background to the right, a ruin with two men, probably the two thieves who will later be crucified with Christ. The print bears a Latin inscription with an explanation of the Return from Egypt, an apocryphal story.
