About this work

The penitent Mary Magdalene praying in a cave. She holds a crucifix against her forehead and reads in a Bible. The book lies on a skull. Next to her in the grass stands an open ointment jar referring to a biblical story in which she anoints the feet of Christ. Under the image a Latin verse by Simon Sovius is printed.
