About this work

After Scipio conquered Carthage, the general magnanimously returned a captured woman to her fiancée. Inscribed on the Roman standard in the centre is the date 1608. In that year, this print, engraved by Barbara van den Broeck twenty years earlier, was republished by Hendrick Hondius. Like her, Hondius too had fled from Antwerp to the Northern Netherlands. Other copper plates by Van den Broeck were also reprinted by Hondius.
