An old woman sits in a modest room, one foot on a stove, a well-filled money chest next to her on the ground. She receives a marriage proposal from a young man, who does not look at her but at the coins in her lap. That the young suitor is after her money is also evident from his statement in the accompanying verse: D'oude berimpeld'om t' ghelt sal ick trawen/Soo vind ick in cooyen/wel ander vroowen.
