About this work

Mary with Child sits in a niche with a small birdcage next to her and on her knee a bird which the Christ Child looks at. Roses lie at her feet. On the arch of the niche and below the scene stand Latin inscriptions referring to love and lovers (Song of Songs 2, verse 16).
