About this work
Imperial troops of Charles V invade Central America, 1530. The original inhabitants of present-day New Spain, now Mexico, practice cannibalism. In the foreground, a Spanish soldier on the left is disemboweled and limbs of other soldiers are roasted. On the right, two more dead soldiers are brought to that spot. In the background, Spanish soldiers and the local population fight a battle. Inscription in two lines of Latin, four lines of Spanish, and four lines of French.
