About this work
The painter and engraver Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675): half-length, facing right. Vorsterman was already working as an engraver at the age of 12. In 1617 or 1618 he came as an apprentice to the workshop of the Antwerp artist Peter Paul Rubens, where he received the master title in 1620. Rubens had Vorsterman make engravings after his paintings. The relationship deteriorated and Vorsterman left for England in 1624. After his return around 1630 he worked for, among others, Anthony van Dyck.
