About this work
A battle between the Romans, led by Scipio Africanus, and the Carthaginians. Foot soldiers and cavalrymen fighting each other. In the left background, a city is on fire. In the left foreground lies the hartsvanger (a type of hunting sword), which is the source of the usual title of this print. Probably during the Second Punic War (218–201 BC).
