About this work
Mercury stands on the right and tells a story to the group of young women. On the left Pan sitting behind the nymph Syrinx. From Syrinx's head reed seems to grow, the reed from which Pan will later make the syrinx (pan flute). In the background a landscape with ruins and obelisks. The scene was previously interpreted as Mercury and the daughters of Aglauros.
