About this work
The angel Gabriel announces the birth of Christ to Mary, who is kneeling at a lectern. From heaven a dove descends, surrounded by angels. In the lower left of the scene an inscription in Latin; below the scene four Latin verses. This print is part of a series of six prints with scenes from the early life of Mary. They are called the 'Masterpieces' because Goltzius imitated the work of various illustrious predecessors in them.
