About this work
Portrait bust of a man, eyes directed at the viewer. Reznicek convincingly argued that this depicts Allaert Fransz. Schatter, the innkeeper of the 'Oranje Appel' in Haarlem. In the background of the portrait, the Haarlem market is depicted, with the inn on the left. The inscription and signature around the oval are in mirror image.
