About this work
Frederik de Vries (d. 1613) was entrusted by his father, the painter Dirck de Vries, to the care of Goltzius. Goltzius made a portrait of the boy together with a dog and sent it to Frederik's father, who was residing in Venice. The hunting dog, which Goltzius often drew, was his own pet. The inscription by Petrus Scriverius speaks of the simplicity of the child and the faithfulness of the dog.
