About this work

Mayor's wife from London, half turned to the left, wearing a hat with a high, flat dome, hat band and standing edges. Large earrings. A folded flat collar trimmed with lace on a thick fur collar above the square neckline trimmed with fur. Herein at the front the split of the shirt is visible, trimmed with lace. On the shoulders a chain that is fixed at the front with a rosette. The overdress has a bodice that ends in a projecting point under the waist and of which both front panels are connected to each other by seven horizontal bands. The bodice has wide sleeves decorated with passement and provided with fur cuffs. The overskirt is folded to the side and to the back and hung on the bodice by means of three ribbon ties. The long underskirt is gathered from the hips and decorated with a passement. Plain long gloves and a stick fan with feathers on a ribbon that is knotted to the right tie.
