Woman of Amsterdam Walking Through the City

Amsterdam woman going to town. On the combed-back curly hair at the back of the head a cap with 'wings' that protrude on both sides of the face. A large, thick pleated collar with the shirt collar visible in the neck. Gathered sleeveless jacket trimmed with fur and provided around the armholes with loose, hanging strips of fabric or ribbons. Long sleeves of fabric with a straw motif and turned-back, pleated cuffs trimmed with lace. Spacious, ankle-length skirt decorated with horizontal bands above the hem. Long white apron, tightly tied around the waist so that the jacket takes a tailored shape. Decorated shoes with higher heels. On the left arm a decorated basket with lid and handle ('bennetje') on which two facing lions hold up a coat of arms. Copy after "Mercatoris Hollandici Vxor / Merchants wife of Holland".
