About this work

Four round depictions of the evangelist symbols: the angel of Matthew, the eagle of John, the ox of Luke and the lion of Mark. Copies after the evangelist symbols of Martin Schongauer. These images have been cut out and thus removed from their original context: a series of eight sheets with six round designs for goldsmiths. On the sheet to which these evangelist symbols belonged were also depictions of the Lamb of God and of Saint Veronica with Peter and Paul.
