About this work
On two other impressions of this portrait, a name of this old man is written in a handwritten note, according to one of these inscriptions an 112-year-old Englishman. The notes, however, mention two different names, Robert South or Charles Digby, of unknown persons. Since it is an Englishman in both cases, the etching can at least be dated to Lievens' period in England.
