About this work
In a cluttered room in a tavern, four men and a woman are having a meal. The drink flows freely and the men smoke pipes. A boy helps a small child drink from a jug. Playing cards, a broken pipe and an empty jug lie on the floor. Originally under this image stood a Latin verse by the poet Tibullus in two lines: Securae reddamus tempora mensae/ venit post multos una serena dies. The strip with text has however been cut off.
