About this work
The scene is based on an anecdote that came to the artist's attention. A shoemaker in London thinks he has found a way to become rich. When a footman brings him a pair of boots, he withdraws into his shop and makes the man wait. Then he comes out and agrees on a price with the footman ('50 pour Cent'), after which he throws one boot out and keeps the other.
