About this work

While travelling through Samaria, Christ halted at Jacob’s well. At the time, Samaritans were hostile towards Jews. Still, the Samaritan woman, whom he met at the well, had heard of the Messiah and that he was called Christ. ‘I am he,’ Jesus revealed to her. Rembrandt emphasizes the antiquity of the well by situating it before ruins.
