About this work

The draftsman uses a 'vetri piani' or glass table apparatus. A glass plate in a wooden frame is placed upright between the draftsman and his model. With a greasy pencil the contours of the image are drawn on the glass. This drawing is transferred to paper. <BR />The instrument was recommended by Leonardo da Vinci for drawing landscapes. Used by Dürer for drawing a portrait.
