About this work

n this later version, Rembrandt deviates from tradition by depicting the sharing rather than the breaking of the bread. The two disciples react with surprise. The innkeeper calmly descending the stairs seems unaware of what is transpiring. Unlike previously, here Rembrandt places Christ under a baldachin as though he, as the Redeemer, is already seated on a throne.
