About this work
Tom Rakewell has just arrived by sedan chair at St. James's Palace to celebrate the birthday of Queen Caroline. He is about to be arrested for debts, but Sarah Young intervenes and offers the bailiffs a bag of money. To the front right, a group of children playing cards, dice, and smoking. Another child steals from Tom. Above Tom stands a man on a ladder refilling oil from a street lamp. Some oil drips onto Tom's head.
