About this work
In a chapel of San Lorenzo in Florence, the catafalque of Emperor Matthias stands before a pyramid of candles. A requiem mass is just being celebrated; between the pillars of the chapel sit the audience, clergy, and nobility. Below the image, a two-line inscription in Italian.
