About this work
According to legend, St. Luke* painted the portrait of Mary. In the Netherlands this theme has been depicted in painting and printmaking since the 15th century: Mary sits, with the Child, as model for the painting saint, who is recognizable by the ox, his evangelist symbol. St. Luke is here represented as a contemporary master with palette, brush and painting staff. In the adjacent room a servant grinds paint.
