About this work

The courtyard of Jan Westerhof, nicknamed Blauwjan, at the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam. In the center of the courtyard stands a birdcage, birds walking around it. Visitors look at the exotic animals. At the bottom in the margin four three-line verses in Dutch about the menagerie.
