About this work

Mary and Joseph stand on a platform and hold each other's hand. A high priest stands between them and joins them in marriage. Joseph holds a flowering staff in his hand, the sign that he is the right man for Mary. Around them stand and sit other marriage candidates who also have staffs. To the right foreground a disappointed candidate breaks his staff. In an ornamental frame with leafy vines.
