About this work
Portrait of Johan Sems (1572-ca.1635), surveyor and mathematician in Groningen, at the age of 59. Half-length portrait, 3/4 turned to the right, with moustache and pointed beard, dressed in toga, with pleated collar. The right hand, holding a compass, rests on an earth globe, which stands next to him. On the background right is a coat of arms. In an oval. The corners outside the oval are filled with various geometric and other instruments.
