About this work
He sits on a chair at a table. In his left hand he holds a pipe, with his other hand he holds a book standing on the table. On the open page is a portrait of himself in his younger years. Behind him on the wall hangs a large portrait of him. He has a wooden leg and next to him stands a dog. Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter died in 1676 after the wound on his amputated leg had become infected.
