About this work
Reynolds always painted his female models as 'ladies', whether they were or not. Also Nelly O'Brien (d. 1768), a celebrated courtesan, is represented in this way. She was the friend of the painter, for whom she posed countless times. This portrait was brought into print not only by Samuel Okey, but also by others; moreover it was often copied.
