About this work

The seated man is the Roman general Scipio. He had taken prisoner the fiancée of his defeated opponent Allucius and is here magnanimously returning her to him. Traditionally, this act was seen as an example of generosity. Such stories with a moralizing message enjoyed particular popularity in Diana Mantuana's time. Barbara van den Broeck also depicted the subject, as seen elsewhere in this gallery.
