About this work
A painter and his wife have just got up: he combs his hair, she puts on her stockings. The painter looks at an unfinished portrait of a woman, which stands against the wall. He tells his wife that she must close the cabinet door properly. The last time the portrayed woman ('pie-grièche', a bird of prey) came to pose, the sofa flew through the studio, because she disagreed about the price of the painting.
