Painter in his studio

The luxuriously furnished studio with the painter as a gentleman, working on a portrait of King Louis XIII, and the distinguished visitor stand in sharp contrast to the representation on the print in the hands of the young man. It is an existing print by Vienot, after a painting by Andries Both, with a representation of the so-called 'poor painter'. This representation refers to the unlettered artist, who paints earthy genre scenes. <BR />'Le peintre noble', as the distinguished painter is called, has knowledge of mythology and other elevated subjects, which he knows how to depict in a worthy manner. For this reason, as the inscription tells, he deserves all praise. These worthy subjects can be seen on the paintings on the wall; they are portraits of dignitaries and allegorical scenes. <BR />(Folder RPK XXIV, Verhaak)
