About this work

Landscape with a reclining naked woman who was made pregnant by the hermit John Chrysostom. Her child lies sleeping beside her. In the background the saint does penance by crawling on the ground swearing off speech and the sight of heaven. Beside the woman lies a hind and stands a stag, on the ground a pheasant scratches. Top left in a pine tree hang two small shields with the electoral and ducal coat of arms of Saxony.
