Saint Jerome as a penitent

Saint Jerome kneels before a crucifix by a tree. He does penance by striking himself on his bare chest with the stone he holds. With his left hand he flips through a book. In the foreground attributes of the saint are depicted; next to him lies a lion and a cardinal's hat. On the left a distant view with a chapel on the bank of a river and in the distance a city in a hilly landscape. In the upper left in the tree hang two shields bearing the electorate and duchy arms of Saxony.
