About this work
Polyxena, the youngest daughter of King Priamus, is kneeling at the grave of Achilles. Behind her stands Neoptolemos with raised sword ready to sacrifice Polyxena. A figure next to Polyxena holds a sacrificial bowl. Behind this sacrificial scene the spirit of Achilles has appeared on horseback, bystanders look on fearfully or cover their eyes. The representation can also be interpreted as the sacrifice of Iphigenia.
