About this work

James the Greater, full-length, with the left arm clamping a staff against his chest, a shell on his mantle, a hat on his head. In the background left it can be seen how James is led bound before Herod; in the background right it can be seen how he is beheaded. This print is part of a series of (probably) 16 prints, consisting of a title page and (probably) 15 portraits, depicting Christ, Mary and the apostles; it concerns a series of mirror-image copies of the so-called 'Great Apostles'.
